On This Day (2/9/1869): Between 1868 and 1869 General Sheridan conducted a Winter Campaign in the Plains region of the United States against the Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Comanche peoples. His goal and orders from the U.S. government were to pac...ify the Plains and force all Native people onto reservations. Other than attacking camps, the main tactic of the winter campaign was to starve the people so that they would be forced onto reservations. Professional hunters, trespassing on Indian land, killed over 4 million bison by 1874, and Sheridan applauded: "Let them kill, skin and sell until the buffalo is exterminated". The Campaign ended on February 9, 1869, after which Sheridan reported killing 319 Natives, wounding 289, and capturing another 53. Along with this, another 1,200 Natives were forced onto reservations.
