DID YOU KNOW THAT?

On December 21, 1921, Louisiana Repubican Governor Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback died. He was 84 years old. Governor Pinchback was Louisiana's first black governor.

Pinchback, who was appointed governor to replace Henry Clay Warmouth in 1872, worked on riverboats to support his mother and siblings in Cincinnati before the Civil War. Pinchback, later, recruited volunteers to fight for the Union Army.

After the war, Pinchback organized the Fourth Ward Republican Club, in New Orleans, and helped establish Louisiania's new state Constitution in 1868.

During that same year, Pinchback was elected to the state senate. He also replaced Lt. Governor Oscar Dunn, who died suddenly of pneumonia.
