One of my favorite movies of all time, if not my favorite, is The Ten Commandments, starring Charlton Heston; not just for the story but also the scope and scale of the movie. It was estimated that if they were to make it today, it would cost $1 billion or more.
Anyway, toward the beginning, the young Egyptian Prince Moses, comes home as a conquering hero. He says to Pharaoh that rather than conquer Ethiopia, he has brought them into the Egyptian empire as an ally. Yet he also proclaims to Pharaoh that there are umpteen treasure barges full of "tribute" from Ethiopia to Pharaoh coming up the Nile.
So in other words the Ethiopians are now, in effect second-class, quasi-Egyptians, forced to pay protection money to Pharaoh.
Protection money? Protection from whom? Why, from being wiped out by their protectors, the Egyptians. Pretty good racket, eh?
Now, fast-forward several thousand years and we see, in that part of the world, not much has changed. Except this time it's the Christians versus the Muslims.
This time it's the Christians who must submit "tribute" to their Muslim overlords. Of course, this is nothing new. Muslims have been doing this since the seventh century, and they did it to our Founding Fathers.
The non-Muslims have three choices while living in a Muslim controlled country or territory. Yes, Muslims are pro-choice! Choice number one: convert to Islam. Choice number two: be classified as dhimma (second class) and pay a tax (jizya=tribute), and the third choice: die. There is no forth choice to just live your life as you choose.
Last week it was reported that in the city of Raqqa, Syria, the Christian population was ordered by their benevolent Muslim overlords to pay a jizya (tax) of 17 kg (37 1/2 pounds) of gold as is customary under Sharia law.
Now I don't know about you, but 17 kg of gold would almost wipe out my whole supply. Really, who has that lying around?
Oh, there are a few other minor points being imposed on the Christians beyond the "protection" money. There can be no public display of Christianity and all Christian church bells must fall silent. No churches can be renovated or repaired and Christians are forbidden from selling alcohol and pork. They also may not possess a weapon.
Geez, sounds like Connecticut!
Naturally the Christians of Raqqa couldn't wait to agree to the terms set forth by ISIS, the Islamic state of Iraq and greater Syria (Levant).
The statement from ISIS read,
"If they reject, they are subject to being legitimate targets and nothing will remain between them and ISIS other than the sword."This Islamic practice is not just happening in Syria. It's beginning to rear its ugly head in other places, such as modern-day Egypt, although there is nothing modern about it.
In Egypt, this is phase 2 of the Muslim jihad against the Coptic Christians, those they didn't slaughter.
But you can't blame the Muslims. They are only following the dictates of their holy book of peace and love, the Koran, which states (Koran 9:29) that tribute be paid, "with willing submission and while feeling themselves subdued". Ah – kinder words were never written.
Maybe there will come a Moses out of Islam to lead the Christians from bondage, but don't hold your breath.
