DID YOU KNOW THAT ?

In January of 1874, the republican-controlled Mississippi state legislature appointed Blanche Kelso Bruce to the U.S. Senate. Senator Bruce was the 1st black man elected to a full term in the Senate.

Senator Bruce, who was born a slave in Virginia, was also the 1st black man to preside over the U.S. Senate. On August 21, 1863, Senator Bruce escaped a group on anti-Unionist when they attacked a abolitionist settlement in Lawrence, Kansas. The attackers were led by William Cla...rke Quantrill.

Quantrill and his men killed abolitionists and blacks and destroyed the settlement. Bruce fled and hid in the bushes behind a fence. He was seen by Quantrill's men and dove into the Kaw River. He found a spot close to the shore that was covered with thick vines and roots. The vines concealed him and allowed him to breathe. Bruce remained in the river for hours before Quantrill and his men give up the search.

After the Civil War, Bruce worked as a steamboat porter along the Mississippi River. During that time, he met Republican leaders that encouraged him to get into politics.
