Leftists are big on imaginary “rights.” Not so big though on real “responsibilities.” On Friday Netroots Nation attendees protested the host city shutting off the water for 17K Detroiters, waving signs that read: “Water is a human right!” But in his column titled “There is no right to free water” the Detroit News’ Nolan Finley writes: “But nearly all of those with incomes below the poverty line receive public assistance. That’s money provided by their fellow citiz...ens to help them pay for their basic needs — food, water, clothing, shelter. And yet barely 50 percent of Detroiters pay their water bill. Meanwhile, up to two-thirds of city residents pay to keep their cable or satellite television service current. And 72 percent do the same to maintain their cellphones.” Finley rightfully concludes it’s because cable & phone companies will cut off service, but until recently the Detroit water dept. hadn’t done so. Sorry “Netroots” nutcases, but those who place watching Judge Judy & texting their boyfriends above paying their water bill deserve to go a little thirsty. P
