DID YOU KNOW THAT ?

On this day in history, January 26, 1922, the House of Representatives passed the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill 231 to 119. The bill was offered by Missouri Republican Congressman Leonidas Dyer.

The bill made lynchings a federal crime and allowed the federal government to prosecute when state and local governments refused.

The bill was supported by 223 republican house members and eight democrats. It was opposed by 116 democrats and three republicans.

The bill was filibustered and blocked by Senate Democrats.
