DID YOU KNOW THAT?

On this day in history, October 16, 1877, South Carolina Republican Congressman Richard Harvey Cain responded to a challenge to his re-election by Democrat candidate Michael O'Connor.

O'Connor claimed that Secretary of State Henry E. Hayn...e favored Cain because they were both black. O'Connor also claimed that election irregularities occurred.

Congressman Cain pointed out that Hayne also approved the results of elections won by white democrats. And after an extensive investigation, the Congressional Election Committee unanimously supported Cain and upheld his election.
