On this day in history, October 22, 1883, republican activist Frederick Douglass responded to a Supreme Court decision that declared the Civil Rights Act of 1875 unconstitutional.

The civil rights act ended segregation and declared that al...l citizens should have equal treatment in public places and have equal access to public transportation regardless of race.

Douglass encouraged the audience to patiently continue to fight for justice and equality. He also dissected the ruling according to provisions within the Constitution.

During his speech Douglass said, "The lesson of all the ages is that a wrong, done to one man, is a wrong done to all men. No man can put a chain about the ankle of his fellow man without finding the other end fastened about his own neck."
